New Game: Tens Go Fish

Tens Go Fish!
(An addition version of the original Go Fish game!)

How to Play:
Remove the Jack, Queen and King. Each player gets 5 cards. Players match up cards to make sums of ten. Players take turns asking each other for the missing number (addend) needed to make ten. If player 2 does not have the card, player will 'go fish' in the pile of cards in the middle (take one card from pile). When or if a player gets a match, he or she draws another card. If a player runs out of cards, he or she draws two from the pile. The player with the most matches at the end wins.

* Can you play the same way, but pick a different sum?

Welcome Back & A Game To Play

Thank you for your patience as we have worked through some necessary planning in preparation for resuming structured learning opportunities for your child.

In addition to what your child’s teacher has provided, I will also be posting various Math games, tasks or activities that you can work on. Please note that when I post ideas/tasks/games on my blog that they are just for you to use if you wish and are not required to be completed or worked on. I just wanted to post some extras in case you were looking for more fun ways to incorporate Math into your child’s learning at home.

Also, don't forget to check out some Math websites that I have posted!

I recognize this is new for most of us and we will get through this together. We are here for your children!

Math Game: ADDITION WAR
Free Deck Of Cards Clipart, Download Free Clip Art, Free Clip Art ...
HOW TO PLAY

- 2 Players
- 1 deck of cards required

Deal all of the cards out into two stacks. Each player gets a stack. One player says, “war” and both players turn over their top two cards. Both players add their cards and state their addition sentence (equation), “2 plus 4 equals 6.” The player with the higher sum gets to keep both sets of cards. If there is a tie, two more cards will be flipped and added. The player with the higher sum will get all of the cards. You can play until one player is out of cards. The player with the most cards wins!

February 2020

Over the next month, we will continue our focus on basic math concepts and start building on these ideas further to challenge our learning and abilities as Mathematicians! We will focus on problem solving where students will be asked to show their work and explaining their thought process.Students should learn to understand each concept and explain how they got to the answer, not just answer it. They will explain the process, strategies used and steps taken to solve the various problems. This is done through “MATH TALK.” It allows students to think deeper about the various concepts and truly understand what Math is and how it is connected to the world around us. It is important that students can solve the problems, but also explain the ‘how’ and ‘why’ as well. Please have these conversations with your students as they complete their Math homework. Challenging the way they think and talk about Math is an important part of their learning.

Students will be asked to answer questions such as:
How do you know?
What strategy did you use?
Can you draw a picture to prove that?
Can you explain what I taught in a different way?

Students will explain how they grew as a Mathematicians by responding to the following:
Share a math word you learned and what it means.
Describe a mistake you made and what you learned from it.
Explain how you challenged yourself today.

Students will start their sentences with:
I solved the problem by…
I can check my answer by…
I discovered that…
The strategy I used was…
Another strategy that you could use would be…
